UCD Safe Learning Team

Our Team

The UCD Safe Learning Study brings together researchers from the UCD School of Education, senior advisors at Concern Worldwide, staff at Concern Sierra Leone, and NestBuilders International who assist with data collection and translations in the field.

The UCD Safe Learning Study team is comprised of researchers from diverse backgrounds, including education, sociology, psychology and anthropology.

The Safe Learning Study is led by Professor Dympna Devine, Assistant Professor Seaneen Sloan, Professor Ciaran Sugrue and Associate Professor Jennifer Symonds.

The study benefits from international expert advice and a team of experienced Sierra Leonian fieldworkers through our collaborations with Nestbuilders consultancy.

Concern Worldwide Logo

Concern Worldwide are an international humanitarian organisation dedicated to tackling poverty and suffering in the world’s poorest countries.  Currently they have programmes working with the most vulnerable communities across 26 countries.

Concern Worldwide has been working in Sierra Leone since 1996 and currently works in Port Loko, Tonkolili District and in Freetown/Western Area. Their integrated programming approach in Sierra Leone aims to tackle all dimensions of poverty, focussing on the overlapping areas of health, education and livelihoods.

Nestbuilders International

Nestbuilders International (NBI) is a multiservice international development consulting firm that provides expert advice and services to governments,  development partners and private sector organizations.

NBI is supporting UCD School of Education to undertake an independent evaluation of Concern Worldwide’s Safe Learning Model in Tonkolili, Sierra Leone. As the local research partner, NBI is tasked with implementing all data collection activities, including both quantitative and qualitative methods at school, community and household level.
